myRIO Aquaponics - Smart, Automated Aquaponic System

Aquaponics is a food-production system that farms fish and plants together in a symbiotic cycle. Fish produce waste that serves as a natural fertilizer for the plants and in turn, the bacteria that reside in the roots of the plants clean the water for the fish. All of this takes place within the nitrogen cycle that lies in the foundation of every aquaponic system. Once an aquaponic system is designed and build for a particular size, the system runs continuously and most of the system parameters (such as grow bed flood level, flood and drains times) are fixed and cannot be easily changed or controlled by the user. myRIO Aquaponics provides that control. myRIO Aquaponics allows the user to tap into the aquaponic cycle and turn a fixed-parameter mechanical system into a flexible, electronically- controlled dynamic system that can be tuned and customized for a particular aquaponics application. With myRIO Aquaponics the user can take full control of the aquaponic system parameters and tune the system to maximize fish and plant harvest at a fraction of a cost of an industrial control system. In addition, myRIO Aquaponics provides continuous monitoring of the health of the system and allows the user to spot the potential problems (e.g. acidic pH levels in the fish tank) early on and take the necessary action. Moreover, with myRIO Aquaponics, an aquaponic system doesn't have to run continuously. The user can adjust the timing of the aquaponic cycle for optimal harvest, as well as balanced power consumption. In addition, if necessary the system can be remotely controlled and monitored through the Internet. The current design, allows the user to monitor the following parameters of an aquaponic system:
• Fish tank temperature (TMP1)
• Fish tank water pH level (PH1)
• Fish tank water level (UTR2)
• Pump flow rate (FLW1)
• Grow bed water level (UTR1)

In addition, the user can set and control the following system parameters:
• Fl - Grow bed flood level set point (inch)
• Ft -Target flood level time (s)
• Pt - Pump OFF time (s)
• Ml - Fish tank minimum water level (inch)
• T1 - Fish tank Temperature Threshold (Fahrenheit)

Once the system parameters above have been set by the user, the LabVIEW code running on the myRIO real-time target automatically controls the operation of the heater and the pump in the aquaponic system to meet the user-defined constraints.

Most people are shocked at how easy aquaponics really is. This eco-friendly system combines fish, aquatic life along with the production of plants, fruits and vegetables. Standard aquaponics designs require a couple of working parts. The most important element is the growing tanks for fish and vegetables. The fish excrement is converted and into a fantastic organic fertilizer for the plants. In turn, your plants will thrive off of the organic fertilizer. They will also return the favor by filtering the water before it is send back to the fish. The two separate systems are made to support each other.

After easily setting your system up, the only maintenance required is feeding the fish and periodically monitoring the condition of the water. They actually require very little attention. This provides us with a very big payoff for such a small investment of time and money. It is no wonder why DIY aquaponics are showing up in backyards all over the planet!

If you are sick of the time and money require to grow food in your traditional soil garden, remove it from your backyard and replace it with an aquapoinics gardening system. Once you get rid of the dirt, you will increase your production exponentially. In addition to functioning outdoors, these units can flourish indoors as well. They are also pleasing to look at and provide a wonderful conversation starter when you have guests in your yard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wa5gX1pg30

Look, the bottom line is that a home aquaponics setup will be much more efficient in your backyard compared to a traditional soil garden. You will be able to grow 100% organic plants, fruits and vegetables. Wouldn’t you like to grow 10 times as much food with half of the space and effort? Also, one of the best features is that you don’t have to pull anymore weeds! Weeds actually deplete the soil of nutrients intended for your plants anyway.
