An aquaponics system is easy to build and can enhance certain space in a house to be more beautiful. The system, at the same time, becomes a very popular choice among house owner. The system is basically built upon the integration between fauna and flora, with which yields of protein will be produced. When one, especially a beginner tries to lay a foundation of aquaponics, some common problem may appear. Several mistakes, then, will eventually destroy the fish and plants. This article will try to approach common misconception on an aquaponics design that should be avoided by anyone who tries to build the system.
- Put the grow bed directly in the tank is a technique that basically will save more space. However, such technique will restrict the access, and in turn, it would be harder for you to access the tank. If you got hard access, then it would be difficult for you to change or remove waters if necessary.
- Put many fish in the tank. This way is not efficient and actually gave rise to a chaotic environment, in which the bigger fish will eventually eat the smaller fish. Moreover, many fish in the tank also means that the biofilter can’t work effectively to convert bacteria.
- Choose plants that can only grow at lower pH levels. A perfect environment for an aquaponics system should have at least 6.8 to 7.0 pH levels.
- Choose the wrong planting medium will result in increasing the pH levels. Therefore, you need to pay attention more to the choice of planting media. It would be better for you to choose expanded shale, lava rock, or hydroton. Avoid using limestone.
- Use tap water when construct an aquaponics design. This is the biggest mistakes that every beginner do. Tap water system usually contains chlorine and fluoride which are deadly to all fish.
